Art director Francoise Mouly encouraged Staake to use a very limited color palette for his illustrations in the book. Unlike most Staake books that often feature scenes filled with busyness and details, "The Selfish Sister" is visually restrained with characters and action staged against bare, white backgrounds. However for the climactic ending of the story, Staake could not resist creating a craczily-cluttered spread featuring "everything but the kitchen sink" -- though we also see a kitchen sink.
