Behind The Pages With Bob:

"I was reaised reading Dr. Seuss' line of Beginner Books for Random House so it was a huge honor to be asked to write and illustrate my own story for the imprint. Seuss had very specific requirements for authors and artists creating these stories, and I would like to think that he'd approve of what I did in 'Can You See Me'."

-- Bob Staake

Staake has always viewed the hero of the story as a chameleon, while his editors at Random House believe it to be a lizard.

Staake worked on "Can You See Me" with Cathy Goldsmith who for years served as Dr. Seuss' editor. Shortly after the book was in production, Ms. Goldsmith retired -- making this one of the last of many Beginner Books she published during her long career at Random House.

Because the story was very color-based, Staake wrote the story and created color pencil drawings when he pitched the book to Random House. "It is an unusual way to submit a book," says Staake, "but I knew the only way my editors would truly 'get it' would be if I showed them exactly how it woulc work in color. It was a risky decision to go this route because if Random House didn't like it, I'd have put in a ton or work -- and all for nothing. Happily, seeing the story along with the drawings convinced them that we had something special here."

A charming Beginner Book about a lovable--but sometimes hard to see-lizard by award-winning illustrator Bob Staake!

This bright, cheerful early reader about a giant lizard hiding in unlikely-and un-lizard-like-places combines Staake's trademark high-energy graphic style with the classic appeal of Dr. Seuss, P. D. Eastman, and Robert Lopshire! With simple rhymed text and illustrations that provide visual clues to the meaning of the words on each page, it's exactly what Dr. Seuss had in mind when he launched the Beginner Books series in 1957 with The Cat in the Hat!
